Are You Listening to What God Is Saying?
You can be exhausted, surrounded by responsibilities, and still have a moment when God gets your attention.
I remember one of those moments very clearly.
It was September 2003. I had four young children—a nine-month-old baby, a three-year-old, a five-year-old, and a seven-year-old. We also had five milking goats.
Every day, I went out to the barn around 10 in the morning to do the chores, and then again around 10 at night after the children were in bed. My husband was getting ready for bed, the house was quiet, and I was out in the barn doing what needed to be done.
I had a little Post-it note on the refrigerator in the milking barn with Bible verses written on it. One of those passages was from 2 Chronicles 20.
That chapter has always fascinated me. An army was coming against God's people, and instead of sending the strongest warriors out first, they sent singers ahead of the army.
They praised God before they knew how the battle would end.
Then I came to these words:
“Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.” 2 Chronicles 20:20(KJV)
That night, those words caught my attention in a different way.
I began going over them in my mind.
Believe in the Lord your God.
Believe His prophets.
So shall you be established.
So shall you prosper.
And then I began to sing them.
I hadn't planned to write a song. I wasn't sitting down with a pen and paper trying to create something. As I repeated the words, a melody came to me.
Right there in that ordinary barn, in the middle of my very ordinary responsibilities, Scripture became alive to me in a fresh way.
It made me think about what it means to believe what God has spoken.
The prophets in Scripture spoke God's message, and the Bible records their words for us. We don't have to wonder what they said—we can go back to God's Word and read it for ourselves.
And I believe God still speaks and leads His people today.
But when someone speaks a prophetic word, I believe we should bring it back to God and His Word. A person doesn't replace Scripture. They don't replace our relationship with God. Instead, what they share should point us back to Him and confirm what He is already doing and speaking in our lives.
That brings me to a question I've been asking myself:
Am I listening?
Not just listening for a dramatic voice from heaven.
Am I listening through Scripture?
Am I paying attention when God brings something back to my mind?
Am I willing to stop long enough to notice what He may be showing me?
Sometimes we expect God to speak in extraordinary circumstances.
But my experience has been that He can meet us right in the middle of ordinary life.
In a barn.
While doing chores.
After the children are in bed.
In the middle of exhaustion.
That night, God reminded me that His Word is something I can hold onto. Something I can repeat. Something I can believe.
So if your life feels full today, don't assume you're too busy to hear from God.
Go back to His Word.
Sit with it.
Read it again.
Repeat it.
Pray it.
And if a melody comes, sing it.
Then ask yourself:
“Lord, what are You saying to me—and am I listening?”
You may be surprised where you hear Him.
And let His Spirit flow through you.
