From Maiden to Mother

As an expectant mother prepares for birth, so much attention is naturally placed on the baby. The nursery is prepared. Tiny clothes are folded into drawers. Hospital bags are packed. Birth plans are discussed. Family members wait with anticipation for the arrival of a new little life.

But there is another birth happening too. Not only will your child be born… You will be born. A first birth is not simply the delivery of a baby. It is the transformation of a maiden into a mother. And that transformation reaches far deeper than physical changes.

Your soul stretches in motherhood. Your heart becomes more tender and fierce all at once. Your priorities begin to shift. You discover strengths you never knew you possessed, but you may also come face-to-face with weaknesses and limitations you never had to confront before.

For many women, one of the deepest adjustments is not just learning how to care for a baby, but learning how to carry their relationship with God into an entirely new season of life.

After I had my first son, one of my greatest struggles was finding time to be alone with the Lord. I was naturally introverted. Quiet moments in God’s presence were where I felt spiritually refreshed and restored. But my firstborn loved people and hated being alone.

Suddenly, the silence I once protected disappeared into the constant sounds and interruptions of motherhood.

At first, I struggled deeply with that change. I wondered if I would ever feel spiritually rested again. But slowly, the Lord began teaching me something beautiful: His presence was not confined to the quiet life I once knew.

Sometimes prayer looked like little children climbing onto my back while I knelt beside the bed, interceding. Sometimes it looked like teaching preschoolers that, although they no longer needed naps, everyone still needed an hour of quiet time after lunch.

Sometimes it looked like gratefully receiving my husband’s offer to take the children out for the afternoon after a birth, so I could sit quietly and recharge my spirit.

Years later, while living above a cabinet shop with open ceilings between rooms, I learned I could spend time quietly with God while still listening for the sounds of motherhood nearby.

Through all of it, the Lord gently taught me that motherhood was not separating me from Him. He was teaching me how to walk with Him differently.

One verse became especially precious to me during those busy years: “He shall gather the lambs with His arm… and gently lead those that are with young” (Isaiah 40:11).

What a comfort those words became. God gently leads mothers. He understands the exhaustion, the emotional stretching. The identity shifts. The interruptions. The moments when you wonder if you are losing pieces of yourself.

But motherhood was never meant to pull you away from God’s presence. Instead, He invites you to carry His presence into every moment of your day. Into the laundry. Into the sleepless nights. Into the nursing chair. Into the sticky hands and noisy afternoons. Into the interrupted prayers.

Keeping God first in motherhood does not always look like uninterrupted quiet time or perfect routines. Sometimes it simply means learning to walk closely with Him as the ordinary moments unfold.

The Holy Spirit knows how to guide you in every step and every word. He knows how to mother your heart while you mother your children. So as you prepare for birth, prepare not only your nursery… prepare your spirit too. Ask the Lord: “Who are You inviting me to become in this season?”

Because the same God who is forming your child is lovingly forming you as well.

Activation

Set aside 10 quiet minutes this week before your baby arrives. Sit with the Lord and ask Him to show you one thing you may need to release and one thing He wants to grow within you as a mother.

Write it down and pray over it throughout the coming season.
