What are Your Words Agreeing With?
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” (Proverbs 18:21)
That verse has been sitting heavily on my heart lately. Not because I haven’t heard it before—but because God has been showing me how often we underestimate the power of our own words. The things we say every day matter. Not just the words we speak to others, but the words we continually speak over ourselves.
“I can’t do this.”
“What if I fail?”
“People will reject me.”
“I’ll never change.”
If we’re honest, many of us repeat fearful thoughts so often that they begin sounding like the truth. We speak from our wounds, our disappointments, and our insecurities without realizing that those words are shaping the atmosphere of our lives. And eventually, we come to an agreement with fear instead of with God. I know this struggle personally.
For years, I stayed safely inside my comfort zone because it felt familiar. I told myself I was being practical and wise, but deep down, fear was making many of my decisions. Fear of backlash. Fear of disappointing people. Fear of stepping into the unknown. Yet even in my fear, God continued nudging me forward. Not into bondage. Into freedom.
Jesus says in John 10:10: “I have come to give you everything in abundance, more than you expect— life in its fullness until you overflow!”
That is the kind of life Jesus came to give us. A full life. An overflowing life. A life not ruled by fear or controlled by the opinions of others. But I realized something important along the way: I could not fully walk in freedom while my words were still partnering with fear.
And then one day, God showed me this truth through my children. When they were little, I heard them speaking words that weren’t life-giving. Negative words. Fearful words. Words filled with frustration and defeat. At first, I wondered where they learned it. Then I started paying attention to myself. They learned it from me.
That realization humbled me deeply. Because suddenly I could hear my own words differently. What sounded “normal” coming out of my mouth sounded harsh and heavy when repeated through the innocent voices of my children. And God used that moment to reveal something deeper in my heart.
Jesus says in Matthew 12:35 that the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart. In other words, our words reveal what’s living inside us. If fear constantly comes out of our mouths, fear has likely taken root in our hearts. If hopelessness constantly comes out, hopelessness may have found agreement somewhere within us. But God never reveals these things to shame us. He reveals them so He can heal us.
That is why Galatians 5:1 reminds us that we have been completely and wonderfully set free through Christ. Not partially free. Not almost free. Completely free. But many believers are still living emotionally and spiritually bound because their words continue reinforcing old mindsets, old wounds, and old fears.
Freedom begins when our agreement changes.
When we stop repeating what fear says and begin speaking what God says, our hearts begin to shift. Our minds begin to renew. Our faith begins to rise. That doesn’t mean fear disappears overnight. But it does mean fear no longer gets the final word.
ACTIVATION: Speak Life This Week
Take 10 minutes today and write down the phrases you say most often about yourself, your future, or your circumstances. Then ask yourself honestly: Do these words agree with fear or with God’s truth? Are they producing life or death? Would I want my children or loved ones repeating these words?
Next, choose 3 Scriptures that speak directly against the fear, insecurity, or limitation you’ve been agreeing with. Speak those Scriptures out loud every day this week, even if it feels uncomfortable, even if your voice shakes.
Because freedom often begins with a simple decision: To stop agreeing with fear… and start agreeing with God.
